A Message From the President
I’m looking forward to an exciting year for ISES LA. Welcome to all of our new board members and thanks to all those returning to the board for another term. I urge all of you to join with our board members and get involved this year. You will reap the benefits of your ISES membership by building relationships with your peers and getting to know them while working together for ISES and eventually turning that into business for yourselves. It takes time to cultivate those relationships and become a recognized team member. Please contact ISES-LA Headquarters or me and let us know that you would like to serve on a committee, showcase your products and services or host an event. I hope that you have all renewed your memberships so that you will be included in the International Directory!
As I look back over the past year, we have many successful endeavors of which we can be proud. Our membership has reached a new high, our fundraiser was a great “fun raiser” as well as a very profitable event, our monthly mixers introduced us to exciting venues and showcasers with whom we can do business and our joint mixer with the San Diego Chapter acquainted us with new colleagues.
My goal this year is to help raise awareness so that others outside our industry will give event professionals the recognition that we deserve as we deliver top-notch goods and services to our clients. We can stand tall as we play a major role in the growth of our industry and the growth of ISES, an organization of talented and dedicated event professionals.
I wish you all a wonderful summer and hope that you will get more involved with ISES LA this year.
Eventfully Yours,
Carol

Focus on Eventworld Welcome Event at The Hollywood Museum
Thursday, August 11, 2005
A bright new star has risen to illuminate the resurgent glamour of Hollywood. The Hollywood Museum in the historic Max Factor Building opened its doors in 2003 and was quickly hailed as the pre-eminent showcase of the entertainment capitol’s illustrious past, joining a handful of venerable city landmarks including Universal Studios Tour, the Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Walk of Fame as “must see” attractions.
The once grand structure, where the King of Hollywood Glamour had created many of the industry’s greatest stars, had undergone a variety of changes since the glory days of Factor, but Beverly Hills real estate developer Donelle Dadigan immediately recognized its historic value. The four story main building, as well as its cavernous basement, offered 36,000 square feet of space ideal for exhibition and, in its last incarnation, had already housed a moderate make-up museum on its first floor. Additionally, Dadigan acquired the adjacent property, originally housing Factor industrial operations, and leased it to the popular “Mel’s Drive-in” restaurant, (“American Graffiti”) as well as a sizeable parking lot, which would afford Museum visitors a Hollywood-inspired food emporium as well as convenient parking.
After securing the original architectural plans dated 1934 and drawn by the famed theatre palace architect S. Charles Lee, Dadigan painstakingly undertook the vast restoration that returned the building to the art deco elegance of the Factor era. What had been reduced to a grimy gray look with chocolate brown carpeting, now became Italian marble floors, the original lighting sconces completely overhauled and the modern molding replaced by exact gilded replicas as shown on the original plans. Researching former Factor employees, Dadigan discovered caches of original make-up, display cases and even Max Factor’s own make-up chair and equipment, which added authenticity to the endeavor.
The building historian and conservator had to figure out the proper materials to use in the restoration. They went back to Los Angeles paint color charts from the early ‘30s and found the exact Dunn Edwards colors that Max Factor used originally. Dadigan met with Ken Edwards, Dunn Edwards’ Chairman of the Board. Amazingly, he remembered working as a gofer in the 1930s and coming to the building with paint samples. He agreed to remix the paint colors for the building with their original formulas.
As soon as it opened, The Hollywood Museum became the city’s preferred location for premiere parties and special events. The Gable & Lombard Grand Salon on the fourth floor was the setting for InStyle Magazine’s viewing party for Jane Kaczmarek and Bradley Whitford’s “Clothes Off Our Back” Golden Globe Auction last January that benefited the UNICEF Tsunami Relief Fund. In February, Congresswoman Diane E. Watson hosted an opening night reception for a month-long celebration of Black History Month and the exhibit “Hollywood In Black and White” that saluted Lena Horne, Sidney Poitier, Herb Jeffries and other community superstars. Every February, the Museum teams with The Hollywood Reporter to host the Annual Oscar®-Nominated Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Symposium in which the 2005 Academy Award nominees discuss their work and present clips from their “bake-off” reels. Last Christmas, Daily Variety selected The Hollywood Museum as the site of its annual holiday party. In addition, Hannibal Lecter’s Cell Block in the basement has hosted events including HBO’s “Six Feet Under” and Universal Pictures’ re-release of the “Silence of the Lambs” DVD.
Paramount Pictures, LA Inc., the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and Bentley/Rolls Royce are also among the Southern California-based charity, business and community organizations that have held parties and gala receptions for key members of the Hollywood and social community.
